Sacrificial Planking

Sacrificial planking was attached to the outer surface of the ship's hull to protect the oak timbers from attack by marine organisms and environmental wear and tear. If the sacrificial planking became damaged, it could be stripped off and replaced without too much impact on the hull.

The ship's frames, hull planks, and anchor stocks are all oak, while the sacrificial planking is pine.
