Lead Roman Numerals
Lead Roman numerals cut from sheet lead that represent the number "IX" or "XI" and the number "I" may have been used as draft marks along the side of the ship in the bow and stern.
The number would have indicated to crew members how much of Queen Anne's Revenge was submerged in the water, which was especially helpful when attempting to navigate shallower waters, which were a major threat to seafarers off the North Carolina coast.
