Coal

Coal and clinkers have been recovered from the wreck site. Beaufort was a major coal refueling station for the Union Navy during the Civil War and was especially significant in sustaining the blockade of Southern ports. Analysis of coal's composition revealed that it originates from a mine that was not used until the late 18th century, therefore, it was likely deposited on QAR during the Civil War period.
