Originally from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Darby has lived in the eastern half of the state for the majority of her life. She received a BS in Anthropology, concentrating in Archaeology, and a minor in History from Appalachian State University. She later attended East Carolina University’s program in Maritime Studies, where she received her MA. Through her BS and MA programs, Darby has participated in archaeological fieldwork in several counties in western NC, along with archaeological survey work of the Tar/Pamlico River around the Washington, NC waterfront.

Darby began working at the Queen Anne’s Revenge Lab with a graduate assistantship through the ECU Maritime Studies program. Darby continued volunteering through the duration of her studies, while simultaneously holding a graduate assistant position in the Special Collections Conservation Lab at ECU’s Joyner Library. Most recently, Darby worked as a conservator for Florida’s Bureau of Archaeological Research in Tallahassee, where she was responsible for the treatment and ongoing preservation of archaeological collections recovered from Florida’s state lands.
